Method

The appraisal adopted both qualitative and quantitative approaches.  The qualitative methods involved mini consultations with a range of voluntary and statutory organisations who are involved with providing services in the Parish.

A written record of these meetings was kept which informed the questionnaire design and  the discussion in the relevant section in the report.  In addition to these meetings a ‘Showcase’ consultation event was held in March 2003 in the village hall.  Approximately 175 Parish residents attended this event.  The event was organised primarily for local people to comment on the questionnaire but also included exhibitions from local businesses, Arts and Crafts and Tourism.  People took this opportunity to raise issues about living in the Parish.  These comments also have been included in the discussion and action plans of the relevant section in this report.  A separate event was organised by the Somerset Rural Youth Project for young people aged 11 -16 years, in March 2003.

A questionnaire was designed and distributed to all households in the parish except those properties which were known to be unoccupied  or short term rented properties. The Parish was divided into 13 sectors with each sector having a pair of volunteers to distribute and collect the questionnaires.  When possible the questionnaire was handed to a member of the household.  At least two attempts were made to deliver the questionnaire to a member of the household.  The questionnaires were collected 10 -14 days later and again at least two attempts were made to collect the questionnaires.

An  independent researcher was contracted to input the data from each questionnaire and provide the primary information.
