Allotments

The Stoke St Gregory Allotment Association

Or SSGAA for short. In late 2016 the SSGAA was formed with the purpose of creating and promoting allotments in the village, thereby meeting a long expressed need to add to the social fabric of the Village. With the kind support of a local landowner a long term lease was agreed on a strip of land that runs parallel to the footpath between Church Close and Slough lane.

The area was laid out to include a planted transition zone adjacent to Church Close, a community orchard with potential for bee keeping and at the Slough Lane end the allotment plots. A total of twenty plots have bee created consisting of fourteen full size plots (80m2) and six half plots.

Most of the plots have now been allocated although a very small number remain available. These will be offered on a first come first served basis with a waiting list being created if necessary.Cultivation has started in earnest and the first produce will soon be ready for harvesting in the near future.

Infrastructure continues to be developed as funding becomes available, with the immediate priorities provision of a rabbit proof fence and a water trough. Several grant applications are being pursued to support this work. In partnership with Transition Athelney the orchard and transition zone will be planted at the end of the growing season.

The SSGAA committee is as follows. Please contact any of these individuals if you are interested in a plot.

  • Chairman: Jim Bowery
  • Treasurer Cecil Boobyer
  • Secretary: Faye Shorley
  • Site Manger: Robin Ferret
