Village Agents: Helping Somerset Communities Thrive
We celebrate our 100 years of dedicated community service this year and we’re proud to reflect on how far we’ve come—and how our mission remains rooted in a royal vision. In 1926, King George V made a heartfelt appeal for communities across Somerset to be better supported, especially in rural areas. From that call to action, the organisation now known as Thrive Somerset was born.
What do Village Agents do?
Thrive Somerset (formerly known as the Community Council for Somerset, or CCS) is a local charity committed to helping individuals and communities flourish. One of the most impactful ways it does this is through the work of Village Agents.
These trusted, locally based professionals provide one-to-one support to people who are vulnerable, isolated, or simply unsure where to turn. Whether it’s helping someone access health services, apply for benefits, find transport, or connect with local groups, Village Agents are practical, compassionate problem-solvers embedded in the heart of Somerset life.
They often work quietly behind the scenes, but their impact is enormous—preventing crises, reducing loneliness, and giving people the tools they need to regain independence.
New Name, Same Mission: Thrive Somerset
In 2024, CCS officially rebranded as Thrive Somerset, with a new look and clearer message. While the name has changed, the vision hasn’t: to help every person in Somerset live well, age well, and feel connected to their community.
The rebrand makes it easier for people to find help, get involved, and understand the wide-ranging work being done—from funding grassroots projects to supporting carers and running community transport.
Celebrating 100 Years of Service
This year marks the centenary of that original call from King George V—a moment that sparked a movement across Somerset. What began as a royal plea has grown into a dynamic network of support that touches thousands of lives every year.
Whether through a Village Agent’s knock on the door, a friendly voice on the phone, or a new grant to support a village hall, the legacy of that 1926 vision lives on.
In summary
Village Agents are the friendly, local face of Thrive Somerset—offering vital support when and where it’s needed most. As we celebrate 100 years of thriving Somerset communities, we honour our roots and look ahead with renewed energy to continue serving every corner of the county.
