Shop

There is now a dedicated shop and café website with all the latest news and information: www.villageshopssg.co.uk

Our community shop offers a wide range of groceries, including fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh meat, fish and dairy, seven days a week from the Royal Oak in the middle of Stoke St Gregory. It is ably managed by Jo and Carolyn assisted by a large team of local volunteers. Please come and visit us to browse our stock, and maybe enjoy a coffee and a slice of home-made cake.

We aim to stock anything for which there is a demand, so if you have any special requests please let us know. Please tell us too if you need to take advantage of our free delivery service, run by volunteers.

Covid

For as long as the pandemic lasts we are taking extensive precautions to keep ourselves and our customers safe. Please wear a mask, use the sanitiser on entering, and make sure that there are not more than 3 other customers before entering. As soon as restrictions are lifted we look forward to opening the café and selling drinks and snacks to eat in as well as to take away.

History

The shop opened in the Royal Oak at 7:30 on 30th November 2020, but the history of the Stoke shop goes back a long way. Until the end of 2019 it operated from the building across the road, between the Oak and the Church, where it traded as The Village Stores, owned and run by Karen and Ian Upshall. The shop had existed on that site through numerous changes of ownership, from at least the early 19th century.

Heart of the Village was set up in 2018, as a Community Benefit Society, to save the shop and the pub which were both for sale. The Village Stores was run temporarily from a shipping container from January 2020, and became a community shop in April. The covid pandemic stalled plans to re-open the pub and café, but the shop has already proved a huge success and a vital resource during lockdown. We look forward to welcoming you to an expanded village hub as soon as circumstances allow.

Volunteering

If you would like to join us as a volunteer, please let Jo or Carolyn know in the shop. There are many different jobs available and we would be very happy to have you on board.
